From October 2017 to October 2018 the Artists’ Association of Nantucket and the Nantucket Atheneum present a community-based stitching and textile project called Interwoven Stories: A Nantucket Stitching Gam.
Participants are asked to create an embroidered ‘page’ inspired by their experience of Nantucket. The works can be made up of images or letters or both. We are leaving the content of the pages open and prescriptive so as to give people plenty of room to express themselves.
Interwoven Stories was started by island summer resident Diana Weymar who has facilitated other community embroidery projects in New Jersey and Washington State.
The project ‘pages’ will be exhibited during the 2018 Nantucket Arts Festival. There will also be a catalog with images of all the works and a short artist bio.
Free kits that contain a cotton 8.5 X 11 ‘page,’ embroidery floss, needles and a hoop are available at the Artists’ Association of Nantucket. All submitted works will become the property of the Interwoven Stories project.
In addition, all year long there will be monthly stitching sessions with experienced artists available to help translate your ideas into a beautiful finished piece. And, there will be programs that celebrate the island’s rich history of textile and needlework design.
The project is cosponsored by the Artist’s Association of Nantucket and the Nantucket Atheneum and funded in part by a generous grant from the Nantucket Arts Council.
