Free, year-round English Language Learning instruction is offered for adult students who want to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

There are two ways to learn English at the Nantucket Atheneum:

  1. Attend a class. Weekly group sessions are an opportunity to practice speaking English and to learn new vocabulary. You don’t need to register in advance. We will welcome you when your schedule allows – but the more often you come, the faster you will improve your English.
    • Thursday evening 6:00 – 7:00 pm (classes meet every week, all year)
      • Beginner class meets in the Gallery
      • Intermediate class meets in the Learning Lab
    • Wednesday morning from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. (class meets every week, Sept.-March)
      • Beginner to Advanced Beginner class meets in Learning Lab
  2. Work with a tutor. One-on-one instruction with a volunteer tutor can help beginner and intermediate level learners build their English language skills. Tutors can also help learners prepare for the U.S. Citizenship test, write a business letter, or get ready for a job interview. You may have to wait a couple of months to be assigned a tutor, but we will find a tutor to work with you.

All teachers and tutors are Literacy Volunteers of the Atheneum who generously contribute their time and enthusiasm.

Come to any class and we will help you get started in the Atheneum’s ELL program.

If you would like more information about classes or how to request a tutor, contact Cheryl at 508-228-1110 ext. 113, ccreighton@nantucketatheneum.org, or complete the Student Information Request form below.
