Reference Associate
The Nantucket Atheneum, the island’s public library, seeks candidates for a part-time position, totaling 26 hours, in the Reference Department. Position to start in January 2018.  Primary Duties includes monitoring public access computers; use of reference collections both physical and online; and clerical duties.

The Reference Associate reports to the department head. The library is looking for an enthusiastic induvial with strong organizational skills who has a passion for technology, problem solving and organization. The Reference Associate has a wide range of duties from assisting patrons to clerical duties and use of a computer. The ideal candidate will show enthusiasm for working with the public, an inquisitive mind, and be a problem solver with technology.

Summary:
Assists the Head Reference Librarian with computer/technical reference, monitors information security, maintains subjects indexed news stories, and helps in the preparation of bibliographies. When the Reference Librarians are absent, assists patrons in the use of all reference service.

Duties may include:
Maintaining the calendar of events for Great Hall and various organizational duties.  Setting up and closing the public access computers in the reference area, assisting with cataloging, and processing inter-library loans.

Requirements:
Able to work nights and weekends.
Strong, patient customer service skills.
Excellent technical skills in Microsoft productivity software, online services like e-mail, online commerce platforms, and retrieving data from databases.

Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time to use computer workstations, including keyboard and visual display terminal.
2. Strength to push or pull a loaded book cart which can weigh in excess of 100 pounds on level floor, to lift or maneuver loads up to 35 pounds onto carts, and to carry cartons of books.
3. Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work.
4. Sufficient vision or powers of observation to permit employee to read books and patron requests.
5. Sufficient clarity of writing, speech, and hearing or other communication capabilities which permit effective communication.
6. Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the employee to type and record library files.
7. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to re-shelve library materials and work at public service desks.
8. Ability to attend professional development classes that require travel.
9. Ability to work in various library locations or at offsite library outreach events as necessary.
10. Normal office exposure to noise, stress, and interruptions.
