CLAMS CATALOG

The Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing (CLAMS) catalog is the primary catalog of the Nantucket Atheneum.
CLAMS is the shared library catalog of the Cape and Islands Libraries Automated Materials Sharing Network, a non-profit, cooperative association of libraries on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.
Member libraries share resources — over 1.6 million items including books, magazines, and non-print resources — through a computer network with terminals located in each member library and also through an online portal.
A CLAMS library card allows patrons to borrow books and other materials from all member libraries.

If the library is CLOSED or you are unable to visit, remember our digital services are available 24/7 on your computer, tablet, or mobile device. You can download e-books and audio books, checkout digital magazines, and stream TV and movies. You can access the catalog to view your account, renew materials, and place holds. Many of our online learning resources and databases can be accessed from your home as well.

All you need is your library card number and PIN.

COMMONWEALTH CATALOG

The Commonwealth Catalog is a secondary resource that allows library patrons access to libraries that hold unique collections that are not available in the CLAMS catalog.
The Commonwealth Catalog covers millions of titles at participating libraries across Massachusetts. Items requested through the Commonwealth Catalog will take a few days to reach the Nantucket Atheneum.  Nantucket Atheneum will notify you when your items are ready for pickup. Items must be returned to the Nantucket Atheneum.
Please search the CLAMS catalog first. If the material you want is not available in the CLAMS catalog, search the Commonwealth Catalog.

ATHENEUM COMPUTERS & WIFI

The Nantucket Atheneum offers free access to computers and Wi-Fi Internet at the library for residents and visitors. Our Wi-Fi’s identification is Atheneum.public.
Due to the computers’ popularity, the Atheneum allows computer use in 30-minute intervals during the busy summer season. Please check with a librarian for the session times at each computer location.

  • Each Atheneum computer has the full Microsoft Office suite of programs: Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint, and multiple Internet browsers.
  • Black and white printing is available for $.25 per page.
  • Bring your own USB flash storage if you wish to save your data.

Do not leave your laptop or any personal items unattended in the library. The Atheneum is not responsible for stolen laptops or any personal items. Avoid extending network and electrical cables across aisles where they might be safety hazards.

  • You are responsible for protecting your own machines against viruses.
  • The library’s wireless network is open, not secure (encrypted), so the library cannot guarantee the safety of your traffic. We recommend that you use a firewall to help protect your computer.
  • Given the nature of wireless networks, your computer may see and inadvertently connect to many town wireless network signals.
  • If several people are using the network, users may experience slower connections. If you experience a connection problem, seek the assistance of a librarian.

Whether you are using an Atheneum laptop or your own devices, you must abide by the Internet Acceptable Use Policy: Rules of Conduct while in the building or on our network.

“Librarians have always been among the most thoughtful and helpful people. They are teachers without a classroom.”
