The Nantucket Atheneum sponsors the Literacy Volunteers of the Atheneum (LVA) program, which provides free English language learning for adults through weekly classes on Thursday evenings and one-on-one tutoring throughout the week.

Learn a Foreign Language
The Nantucket Atheneum provides access to Mango, an online language-learning system that can help students of all ages learn languages, such as, Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, Russian and more.

The Atheneum offers a book-delivery service once a week to the Island Home, Landmark House, Homestead and surrounding area for homebound individuals. Library staff will help you with your material selection; call and let us know your interests or preferences. Materials will be delivered and picked up on the same day. A limited quantity of the most popular Federal and State tax forms and instructions are available at the Atheneum. Please call the Reference Department at 508-228-1110, x110 to check availability. Patrons may print out the forms/instructions on library computers.
The Reference Department offers free-of-charge proctoring services to people enrolled in continuing education courses. Contact us at 508-228-1110, x110 to discuss your needs with our head reference librarian. The proctor must register with and be approved by your school in advance of the exam. Exams will be sent to the proctor, who will then contact you and schedule a mutually agreeable time for you to take the exam in the library.
Note: Any mailing expenses for returning tests, not covered by the testing institution, must be paid by the student.
Printing from computer workstations to a black and white printer is $.25 per page. If you have any trouble with the printers, or if you have an unusually large file to print, please see the Reference Desk staff for assistance.
Public photocopiers are available on the main floor across from the Circulation Desk and on the second floor in the Great Hall. The cost is $.25 per copy.
No Faxing or Scanning
There is no public fax machine or scanning equipment in the Atheneum.
A typewriter with correction is available at the Reference Desk on the second floor. For other document needs, Microsoft Word is available on all computers.
Suggest a Book, DVD or CD Purchase
You can request that the library purchase an item through our catalog. Although we try to fulfill most requests, certain circumstances may prevent us from purchasing all requested items.
