Calvin Royal III began his formal dance training under the direction of Suzanne Pomerantzeff and Patricia Paige at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida.
He was a finalist at the Youth America Grand Prix Competition in New York CityÂ in April 2006 and joined the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at ABTÂ in September 2006. Mr. Royal was theÂ recipient of the Ethan Stiefel Scholarship, and while at the JKO SchoolÂ appeared in original works by Raymond Lukens and Jessica Lang.
Mr. Royal joined ABT II in December 2007 and danced leading roles including Prince Siegfried in the White andÂ Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake, George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Jerome Robbins’ Interplay, Antony Tudor’s Continuo, as well asÂ works by Edward Liaang, Aszure Barton, Jodie Gates, and Brian Reeder.
Mr. Royal joined ABT corps de ballet in April 2011. His repertoire with the Company includes principal and soloist roles in Twyla Tharp’s Bach Partita, Paul Taylor’s Black Tuesday, Stanton Welch’s Clear, Merce Cunningham’s Duets,Â and Alexei Ratmansky’s Piano Concerto #1, a Fairy Knight in The Sleeping Beauty and Sir FrederickÂ Ashton’sÂ Sylvia. He created a role in Marcelo Gomes’ Aftereffect.
In January 2014, Royal was a nominated for the Clive Barnes Awards, in additionÂ named one of Dance Magazine’sÂ “Top 25 to Watch” inÂ 2014.
