Director of Development

Employer Information:
The Nantucket Atheneum, founded in 1834, is a private non-profit organization which provides public library service to the year-round and seasonal residents of Nantucket. With an annual operating budget of $1.7 million, one third of the Atheneum’s annual revenues come from the town and the remaining two thirds of the revenues must be raised annually from philanthropy. The Atheneum has an endowment of $7 million and a donor base of 890 as of FY09.

The Atheneum, housed in a historic 1847 building, is situated in the center of the historic town of Nantucket. The island of Nantucket is located 38 miles off the coast of Cape Cod and accessible by daily ferry and airport service. The population of the island is 11,000 year-round and expands to 55,000 during the summer.

General Job Description: The Nantucket Atheneum, the island’s public library, seeks a highly motivated and experienced Director of Development. The Director of Development is responsible for planning and implementing all development and fundraising activities, including major gift and sponsorship solicitations, annual campaign, marketing, special events and grant research and writing. The Development Director reports directly to the Executive Director.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Development responsibilities include:

  • Together with Executive Director and Board of Trustees, identify, cultivate and solicit gifts from current and prospective donors, including individuals, small businesses, corporations and foundations
  • Initiate and supervise all annual special fundraising events
  • Plan and manage an aggressive annual campaign together with the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees
  • Develop and manage a marketing plan to help promote the funding needs of the Atheneum and to ensure the success of fundraising activities
  • Research grant funding sources and execute corporate and foundation grant solicitations
  • Create and implement annual and long-term development
  • Develop and implement a planned giving program

Management responsibilities include:

  • Together with Executive Director, Board of Trustees and management team ensure implementation of Strategic Plan
  • Direct and manage the daily work of the development department
  • Manage and supervise donor database and campaign records using Sage software and Wealth Engine.
  • Supervise the part-time Development Assistant and volunteer staff
  • Prepare and administer the development department budget
  • Establish a communications calendar
  • Establish and manage grant calendar, including application and report deadlines, and ensure compliance with grant guidelines
  • Assist Executive Director and Board with external communications and presentations
  • Collaborate with other non-profit development officers on island

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5-10 Years of  experience in fundraising and development
  • Strategic thinker who is entrepreneurial and a self-starter
  • Strong people skills with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time-management skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to complete projects on time
  • Ability to work as a leader and as part of a team
  • Experience in managing an assistant and volunteers
